#409: Yankees Lose, Morris' Halloween Costume, A Creative Rut Unlock & NO-Vember is back!
+ Process Junkie, Drawing Dogs @ The Vet, I host Picture This! tonight & More!
…with a very sullen post-World Series hangover, I welcome you to issue #409 of New York Cartoons.
I watched witnessed Game 3 on Monday night through gritted teeth as the Yankees failed to miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. My writing partner, Scott, took me out for a belated birthday meal before our mood went from giddy hope to bleary-eyed despondency. By the 4th inning of the game one panicked fan walked out to get a reading from the psychic next door. The anticipation was just too much for him to bear.
The fifth inning of last night’s Game 5 horror show was more terrifying viewing than anything tonight will deliver...
It is, of course, Halloween, giving everyone, everywhere in New York, an excuse to look even freakier than usual. (Honestly, the subway has felt like Halloween for about 4 years).
Morris had an extra-deep level of disdain for his costume this year. He ended up tearing off the bumble bee antennae and nearly swallowing one to prove a point.
In future, I’ll stick to more traditional costumes, like dragons or dinosaurs. He clearly loves that.
I can’t believe it’s already here, but NO-vember is about to kick off, beginning TOMORROW! This is an annual challenge I’ve run for years, where I get you to practice saying NO to one thing for each day of NO-vember. I updated and add new content each year, but the bones of it bear repeating. Often.
You can sign up for the NO-Vember Challenge here.

Live Drawing Puppers in Brooklyn This Weekend
My dull mood will be buoyed by getting to draw pups this weekend at the new Heart of Chelsea Vet location in Brooklyn. I’ve done this a couple of times before— they’ve been a great group who have been looking after Morris since he was a baby goblin. Take a look at this week’s sketchbook below for a peek at the previous cartooning of pups at their Chelsea location.
The Guard Dog Story
I just finished my second round of reading Patrick McDonnell’s incredible new book, “The Guard Dog Story”. If you haven’t picked it up yet (and you love dogs) I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. It’s got everything— goosebumps, tears, laughs: it makes me crazy trying to figure out how he does this stuff so well.
This week over on Process Junkie: some advice to get you out of you creative rut —PLUS! Tomorrow, a peek inside a sketchbook from Paris, and some insights on fidelity. Sign up to get posts in your inbox each week!
This week’s Sketchbook is from a previous live cartooning gig, drawing pups at the Chelsea location of Heart of Chelsea Veterinary Group. It’s the best gig I have all year!
Great ghosting cartoon!
