The article about political editorial cartooning is interesting. Social media has totally messed up free speech. Until people can be held accountable for aggression and threats, I fear we're doomed. It's like a new "dark ages" now resulting from information overload. Even pointed, intelligent critique gets lost in the enshitification of everything.

That said I do also think ethics in the creative class have suffered. Statements like this, from the article, "Good cartoonists push boundaries and upset people..." reveal a kind of habitual malice aforethought. Cart before horse.

The same is true in the art world. To be avant garde you need do something wacky that offends. It's such a cliché. Today there's no 'garde' to be 'avant' of. And creators have lost their grounding.

I'd like to think there is or will soon be a new new way of doing things. I haven't seen or found it yet though.

Thanks for all your great work on Substack.

I tend to agree. Especially on the count that social media has messed up free speech.

Thank you for the kind note.
