The iconic, sassy American comic character, created by Ernie Bushmiller, finally had her own festival this weekend at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum and Library. There were so many highlights.
Fun fact, my landlady is Cathy Guisewite (the Cathy) and she and my husband went to Tom’s house for the rehearsal for the Bushmiller play out here in LA last month. He loved your animation but didn’t know it was you until I showed him this amazing post!
And those Sluggos were the perfect NIGHTcap of a terrific event. Really nice to catch up and talk shop with you, Wayno. A highlight! (I was going to post the photo but we’re both blinking in it! I’ll email it to you anyway)
Thank you! I love Nancy, and newspaper comics (but I do the puzzles too), so thanks for this amazing write up. It was lovely to be reminded of Jim Russell and The Potts as well. Long live Uncle Dick!
I intend to visit the exhibit, but in the photo you were shown on your special tour showing the NCS luncheon in 1963 to honor Rube Goldberg on his 80th birthday, I immediately noticed actor Jack Gilford sitting at table 14. Now I'm intrigued to figure out the connection between the two.
What a post. Loved even the photos of that original art. And that letter - 6 bucks for lunch including tip, but you pay for your own drinks...would have been lethal otherwise. I never got into Nancy, but this has intrigued me.
Now you're making me wish I was there! Who knew a fest surrounding a single comic strip could be so fun.

I just had coffee with Tom ten minutes ago! Haha... small world.
Cathy is wonderful. I have a lot of love for her-- one of the best things I look forward to when I go to the Reubens is seeing her.
She's the best and has treated us like family since the day we moved to LA 19 years ago. My challenge for you today is to illustrate Tom's voice.
Impossible.
But I do a VERY good impression of him, if I do say so myself...
Here's something Tom made for me when I was hosting in Pittsburgh 11 years ago-- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0uTb3HlfFM
(My Gammill impression is around 13:10 mark hehe..)
Pretty good! Also, I just gotta say that posts and conversations like these are why I'm loving substack.
Same!
Thank you again for the kind words. It's nice to find people on here who are great humans!
Perfect recap of a terrific event!

Good eye. That's definitely Jack Gilford! Amazing.
Thanks for the wonderful write-up, Jason! It was truly a terrific event and your reportage drawings capture so much of it beautifully!

That’s a whole lotta Nancy! Great read, made me very envious, thank you!
I’m a Nancy fanatic— I didn’t know about this event but I’m glad you were on the case with this report!
